Drag Racing

Drag racing involves a race between two cars over a specific distance (usually a quarter mile, but can be shorter or longer). The aim here is basically to accelerate from a standing start to win the race by covering the specified distance in the quickest possible time. This is not about the fastest car as the distances covered are relatively short - it is all about the acceleration you can achieve from a standing start and how quickly you can get off the start line within the regulations set by the race organisers.

In official drag car races the drivers will activate a timer when they accelerate off the starting line which will stop when they cross the finish line. The time marked by the timer is often referred to as the elapsed time. Most races will run as an elimination type of tournament where you have to win a race to move on to the next round. And, most races are graded according to the class and type of vehicles involved.

If you are thinking of taking up drag car racing then you may make modifications to your car to get the optimum cold start acceleration. This usually involves making your car as light and as powerful as is possible. It is important to make sure that your car is in good condition and that you wear appropriate safety gear as necessary. It isn't recommended that you take part in non-organised or on road drag races - it is always better to take part in formal races on a track.
